Marcie Bohan, LMSW
After graduating from NYU with a major in Art History, I began a career in arts administration and retail marketing. It was years later, while opening and running a resale maternity and children's clothing shop with a friend, that I realized I was drawn to the work of bringing people together in a supportive and empathic environment. I loved the community that grew up around the store. I returned to NYU to earn my Masters in Social Work and am now a licensed social worker in New York State. My experience ranges from clinician in out-patient mental health and private clinics, to social worker in the New York public school system. I have trained working in different modalities, from ongoing psychodynamic practice to more structured cognitive behavioral therapy. I have seen the benefits of incorporating mindfulness into my practice and I enjoy sharing that with my clients. I strongly believe in the mind-body connection and practice with a holistic approach to help get clients to a healthier self. I am dedicated to working with my clients to help them get to the better they envision for themselves through a supportive therapeutic relationship.
Psychotherapy:
I am pleased to announce that as of April2016 I will be joining Routh Chadwick LCSW and Associates. I will be available to offer Psychotherapy sessions to address clients' individual needs through a range of modalities, from structured Cognitive Behavioral Therapy to ongoing Supportive Counseling. I am here to help clients process whatever struggles or challenges they are encountering in their lives.
Some common issues I explore with clients are:
Life Coaching:
I have been where you are now. Feeling stuck, looking down at my feet wondering if I have it in me to step forward. And if I do, do I go straight, left, or right? You can feel lost, rudderless, and unable to see a clear path. Anxiety and feelings of doubt can be unwelcome companions on your way to change. How do you start writing and living your next chapter and take these next steps? Sometimes life's next choices and changes are just below the surface; they just need to be uncovered.
I can offer you assistance identifying where you are stuck, and what might be causing you to feel stuck. Your beliefs and feelings can be your biggest obstacles. I can help you sort through the "clutter" and take stock and control, putting things in order to get you on your way. I use Motivational Interviewing to help you uncover the skills you can call on to help make those changes you desire for yourself. I believe you have the natural inherent motivation to move towards growth, and I believe it is important that you feel supported in this process as you come to your own personal solutions.
Through my training, I recognized the importance of the holistic approach to healing and the advancement to goals. For example, you may arrive identifying your desired focus of change to be career, but upon contemplation of other important areas of your life (romantic, financial, spiritual etc), you may see how intertwined with and influential they are on each other. My life coaching takes the holistic belief of treatment (the importance of consideration and integration of every area of your life) and will help you, the client, identify what is going on presently. Once "what is not working now" is recognized, I can help you map out the plan you envision for the future you.
I also consider an important part of my work to be connecting people and services. I find that life coaching often involves the coach assisting the client to think outside the box, or in a new way. This can lead to networking and connecting in ways they previously never considered.
I am a later career changer, returning to grad school for my MSW 20 years after earning my BA. I am an attentive and empathic listener who will assist you in clarifying and achieving your goals.
I look forward to connecting with you and helping you on your new journey of discovery. Where do YOU want to go next?
Warmly,
Marcie
